At Ruthie Harper MD, in Austin, TX we are excited to offer the benefits of TriBella and show you how this revolutionary skin rejuvenation treatment can help you achieve the complexion you desire.

TriBella Photorejuvenation

TriBella’s photorejuvenation component employs Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target and treat various skin imperfections. IPL delivers gentle pulses of light to the skin, stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of age spots, sun damage, redness, and vascular lesions. This process enhances skin tone and texture, resulting in a more even and youthful complexion.

TriBella Anti-Aging

The anti-aging aspect of TriBella skin rejuvenation treatment harnesses the power of Multi-Polar Radio Frequency (RF) technology. This advanced radiofrequency technology works by delivering controlled heat deep into the skin, promoting collagen and elastin production. The increased collagen and elastin fibers help to tighten and firm the skin, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. TriBella’s anti-aging treatment can rejuvenate the skin, restoring a more youthful and radiant appearance.

TriBella Skin Resurfacing

TriBella’s skin resurfacing component utilizes NanoFractional Radio Frequency with SmartScan technology. This non-ablative procedure creates microchannels in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing response and promoting collagen remodeling. The result is improved skin texture, reduced acne scars, diminished pore size, and a smoother complexion. The precise and controlled energy delivery of TriBella ensures minimal downtime and optimal results.

Customized TriBella Skin Rejuvenation Treatment

One of the key benefits of TriBella is its ability to be tailored to individual needs. At Ruthie Harper MD, each session is customized based on your specific skin concerns and goals. Advantages of a Thread Lift Over a Face Lift

As people age, the skin on their face begins to lose its elasticity and can result in sagging, wrinkles, and a tired appearance. Many people turn to cosmetic procedures to combat these signs of aging, with facelifts being one of the most popular options.

However, facelifts are invasive procedures that are very expensive, require anesthesia, and can lead to significant pain and prolonged downtime. But in recent years, a new non-invasive option called the thread lift has emerged.

Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX offers the revolutionary new MINT™ thread lift. This minimally-invasive anti-aging treatment offers many of the same benefits of a surgical facelift – without the expense, pain, complications, and long recovery period of surgery.

In this article, Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD will discuss the benefits of a thread lift over a surgical facelift.

What is a Thread Lift?

A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses a dissolvable suture material made of sugar to lift and tighten sagging skin. During the procedure, threads are inserted under the skin, which are then pulled to lift and tighten the skin. The threads are then anchored in place, and the excess thread is trimmed away. The entire procedure can be completed in under an hour, and there is minimal downtime.

Benefits of a Thread Lift Over a Facelift

1. Thread Lifts are Non-Invasive: A thread lift is a non-invasive procedure, while a facelift is an invasive surgical procedure that requires general anesthesia. The risks associated with general anesthesia are higher than those associated with a thread lift.

2. Thread Lifts are Non-Surgical Procedure: A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure, which means there is no anesthesia required, and the risk of complications is significantly reduced. The procedure is minimally invasive, and there is minimal pain or discomfort during the procedure.

3. No Downtime with Thread Lifts: A thread lift requires minimal downtime, and most people can return to their regular activities immediately after the procedure. There may be some swelling or bruising in the days following the procedure, but this usually subsides within a few days.

4. Thread Lifts Offer Natural Looking Results: A thread lift provides natural-looking results that can last up to two years. The threads used in the procedure are made of biodegradable sugar material that is naturally absorbed by the body over time. As the threads dissolve, collagen is left behind and the skin is left looking firmer and tighter.

5. Thread Lifts are Less Expensive: A thread lift is a less expensive option than a traditional facelift. The cost of a thread lift can vary depending on the number of threads required, but it is generally less expensive than a facelift.

6. Thread Lifts are Customizable: A thread lift is a customizable procedure that can be tailored to meet the needs of each patient. The number of threads used can be adjusted to provide the desired level of lift and tightening, and the procedure can be performed on specific areas of the face or the entire face.

7. Thread Lifts are Very Low Risk: A thread lift is a low-risk procedure, and the risk of complications is minimal. Some people may experience minor bruising or swelling after the procedure, but these typically subside within a few days.

Get Rid of That Double Chin with Kybella!

Frustrated by that double chin? You’re not alone! In a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery approximately 70% of participants reported being bothered by the appearance of fat under their chin. In another study of 1,996 survey respondents, 49% said that the area under their chins negatively impacted their appearance, and 35% of the people surveyed revealed that they shied away from photos and video chats because of their double chin.

Up until recently, getting rid of a double chin was almost impossible – since it is an area that simply doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. In many cases painful and expensive face or neck lift surgery and/or liposuction was the only remedy for a double chin – accompanied by scars and a long recovery period.

But revolutionary new Kybella injections are a nonsurgical treatment that can reduce or eliminate a “double chin” – affordably and with no downtime!

In this article Austin, TX anti aging expert Dr. Ruthie Harper explains how Kybella works and answers patients’ most frequently asked questions about this innovative new double chin treatment.

Causes of a Double Chin

Fat beneath the chin is called “submental” fat – and the three primary causes are genetics, aging, and of course, weight gain.

Putting on weight is the most obvious culprit in developing a double chin. But DNA plays a role as well. Heredity largely determines where our body will store fat cells – so if one or both of your parents had a double chin, there’s a good chance you will too. And when a double chin is genetic, even people at or near a healthy weight can still be troubled by excess fat under the face!

Additionally, as we age, the skin on the face becomes thinner, looser, and less elastic. As a result, fat in the lower face, neck and chin often sags and becomes more visible – creating jowls and a more pronounced double chin.

Studies have shown that both men and women with a double chin are perceived to be older and heavier than they actually are, by other people.

How Kybella Gets Rid of a Double Chin

Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally produced by the human body. Deoxycholic acid breaks down dietary fat, causing it to be absorbed and eliminated from the body.

When deoxycholic acid is injected into the chin, it literally dissolves the submental fat under the jaw. The destroyed fat cells are then absorbed and eliminated by the body over time – creating a significantly stronger and more defined jawline.

Kybella is currently the only FDA approved injectable drug for the reduction of submental (under chin) fat.

How Long Will Kybella Results Last?

Kybella Double Chin Treatments have been available in the United States since 2016. And long-term studies on patients have determined that the results of Kybella Double Chin Treatment appear to be permanent.

This is because the human body does not have the ability to produce new fat cells. So, when submental fat cells are destroyed and removed during the Kybella Double Chin Treatment, it is virtually impossible for them to return.

In fact, clinical studies of patients injected with Kybella who gained weight following their treatment did not show any submental (under chin) fullness returning. This further supports the evidence that Kybella Double Chin Treatment is not only long-lasting, but truly permanent.

Is Kybella Double Chin Treatment Safe?

Because Kybella is a form of an acid that is naturally produced by the body it is generally very safe. And since it is non-surgical and requires no anesthetic, there are not the risks of infection, scarring etc. that come with liposuction or surgery.

Kybella was developed over the course of nine years, during which time it was subjected to more than 20 clinical studies, and tested on more than 2,600 patients before being brought to the market. In these clinical tests, more than 80% of Kybella patients expressed complete satisfaction with the double chin reduction results. So, the FDA Medical Advisory Committee gave the Kybella Double Chin Treatment a unanimous recommendation of approval.

In 2015, the Kybella Double Chin Treatment was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. And it remains the only FDA approved injectable treatment for the reduction of submental (double chin)  fat.

How Many Kybella Double Chin Treatments Are Needed?

The number of Kybella treatments required varies from patient to patient, depending on the amount of submental fat that needs to be removed. But the typical number of Kybella treatments is between two and five. The procedures should be scheduled no less than a month apart, and only take a few minutes in our Austin, TX medical office.

The most typical patients usually only need to undergo two treatments spaced a month or two apart. But each patient’s specific number and timeframe of Kybella treatments will depend on their unique physiology as well as their fat loss and appearance goals.

Side Effects of Kybella Double Chin Treatment

Generally, the only side effects reported by most Kybella patients is minor tenderness and mild swelling in the treatment area – which subsides fairly quickly.

When administered by a skilled physician like Dr. Ruthie Harper in Austin, TX other side effects reported after Kybella injections are exceedingly rare and are similar to side effects associated with any injection such as a flu shot, dermal filler, or any other cosmetic injections.

In the hands of an unskilled injector, injection in the wrong place – such as outside the fat deposit or too close to the mouth – can cause skin or nerve damage. But Dr. Harper has never had a complication from Kybella double chin injections in any of her patients. So, you can confidently consider Kybella a safe and effective treatment for eliminating double chin fat.

Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella Double Chin Treatments?

Almost any adult man or woman in good health who has extra submental fat under the chin is a good candidate for Kybella injections. It is ideal for busy people, and an excellent alternative to surgery, because there is no downtime. It is also safe for all skin tones and colors.

Really, the only patients who should avoid Kybella are individuals with bleeding problems, those who have difficulty swallowing, or anyone who has other medical issues that affect the neck and face. Additionally, while Kybella is highly safe and effective for most people, patients who have undergone other cosmetic procedures on the jawline, neck, or chin (such as a facelift) should be carefully evaluated by Dr. Harper prior to being approved for Kybella Double Chin Treatment.

When You Will See Kybella Double Chin Treatment Results

Typically, patients who receive Kybella Double Chin Treatment begin to see visible results after just a few weeks, as the swelling subsides, and the body starts to eliminate the destroyed fat cells. Complete results will continue to improve over the next several months. As additional Kybella treatments are administered, the more dramatically patient results continue to improve.

5 Reasons Austin Patients Love Kybella Double Chin Treatment

Fat below the jawline – commonly called a “double chin” – is a problem that affects nearly half of adults in the US. Results of a survey revealed by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reported that 55% of women and 40% of men are bothered by the appearance of fat in the area underneath their chin.

49% of the respondents in that survey said that they felt the area under their chins negatively impacted their appearance, and 45% of those surveyed believed that other people noticed the fat under their chin. And being self-conscious about submental fat not only affects people’s self-esteem, it also negatively impacts aspects of their life.

In that study, 35% of the respondents reported avoiding being photographed or video chatting because of their double chin. And 29% of the men surveyed said they had grown a beard to hide the fat under their chin. (Obviously, that is not an option that women have!)

But thanks to the revolutionary Kybella double chin treatments, women and men suffering from submental fat can visit Ruthie Harper, MD and get the sleek, defined chin they have always wanted, without surgery. In this article Austin’s renowned Doctor Ruthie Harper, MD explains five of the biggest reasons her patients love amazing Kybella double chin injections.

#1. Kybella Double Chin Treatment is Non-Surgical

Few people are willing to undergo the pain, expense and long recovery period of a surgical neck lift or facelift. But for decades surgery was the only way to remove submental fat underneath the jaw. Liposuction is another type of surgery for submental fat removal, which also requires anesthetic, multiple small incisions and several days of recuperation – and it is also quite expensive.

But in 2015 a revolutionary new injectable treatment called Kybella was FDA approved to literally “dissolve” fat without surgery. Kybella uses a synthetic formulation of a substance that is naturally found in the body (deoxycholic acid) that breaks down, absorbs, and eliminates fat from the body -without surgery and with no downtime!

#2. Kybella Double Chin Treatments Really Work!

The FDA’s 2015 approval of Kybella as a double chin treatment was supported by two clinical studies. During that testing, more than a thousand men and women with double chins were injected with either Kybella or a placebo. The participants who were injected with Kybella saw a significant loss of submental fat, compared to the control group that saw no reduction in fat under the chin.

A single Kybella treatment can result in a reduction in double chin fat of up to 30%! And, after just 2 or 3 treatments, 50% to 90% of the fat in the treated area can be eliminated.

#3. Results are Permanent with Kybella Double Chins Treatment

Because double-chin fat is often genetic (determined by your DNA) it rarely responds to dieting or exercise. And, while working out and eating less can reduce the size of fat cells in the body, it does not remove the fat cells themselves.

But Kybella is injected directly into the chin fat, where it dissolves and permanently eliminates the submental fat cells. And multiple clinical studies have confirmed that Kybella provides permanent results.

Additionally, because the human body lacks the ability to create new fat cells, when Kybella destroys fat cells, they will be gone forever and can never come back in that area. This long-term effectiveness of Kybella was further proven in studies where Kybella patients subsequently gained body weight – but still did not see a return of submental fullness under the chin.

#4. Kybella Reduces Double Chins Rapidly

Most patients who undergo Kybella double chin treatment will observe results after just a few weeks. And in a few months complete Kybella results will become visible as the body eliminates the destroyed fat cells over time.

Even better, Kybella results will continue to improve with each treatment the patient receives. Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD, has administered hundreds of Kybella injections to her Austin patients with remarkable results.

#5. Kybella Double Chin Treatment is Very Safe

Before being FDA approved, more than 20 clinical studies were conducted on the safety and effectiveness of Kybella, with the injections tested on over 2,600 patients with double chins.

During this testing, more than 80% of test subjects reported complete satisfaction with the results of their Kybella double chin injections. So, in 2015 the FDA Medical Advisory Committee awarded Allergan unanimous approval for Kybella.

And remember, Kybella is simply a synthetic duplicate of a substance produced naturally by the liver. So, the risk of side effects, allergic reaction, or complications is extremely rare.

Additionally, due to the non-surgical nature of Kybella there is virtually no risk of infection or the other complications of surgery. The only side effects routinely reported by our Kybella patients is slight, mild tenderness or redness at the injection sight.

When administered by a skilled and experienced doctor like Ruthie Harper, MD in a medical office, Kybella is highly safe as well as extremely effective.

Do MINT PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?

Do MINT PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?

A PDO thread lift is a minimally-invasive procedure – and an alternative to facelift surgery – that does not require general anesthesia, involves no large incisions, and has no significant downtime or post-procedure pain.

But, with all of these advantages over invasive facelift surgery, our patients often ask us: “Do PDO Thread Lifts Really Work?”

MINT PDO Threads Lifts vs. Face Lift Surgery

MINT™ PDO thread lifts have become an extremely popular alternative to facelift surgery for many reasons.

Even though face lift techniques have improved in recent years, face lift surgery still requires that the patient be hospitalized and “knocked out” with anesthesia. Then, during the face lift operation, large incisions are made, loose skin is literally cut off with a surgical knife, and then the tissue around the facial muscles is tightened and sewn back together – typically leaving lengthy scars behind the ears or around the hair line.

Drain tubes are typically placed in the face at the time of face lift surgery to remove any blood or fluid accumulation. Bed rest is required for a few days to a week after facelift surgery, and pain, visible swelling, and bruising can last for two to three weeks – or longer.

Conversely, MINT PDO Thread Lift patients experience virtually no downtime, and are able to resume work and other daily activities the next day. And there are no large incisions to heal and hide.

MINT PDO Thread Lift Results

During a non-surgical PDO thread lift, invisible sutures or “threads” are inserted beneath areas of sagging skin to pull it back into its original, youthful position. So, instead of cutting off loose skin like painful facelift surgery, a thread lift simply puts skin back in its original place and holds it there.

In other words, a thread lift simply restores youthful, natural looking tone and tightness – without the typical “sliced and stretched” appearance of a face lift.

Additionally, the inserted threads also activate the body’s production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This results in natural development of thicker, younger, smoother, tighter and more elastic facial skin over time – with results that last for years, even after the PDO threads have dissolved.

So, while a facelift just stretches “old” skin, a thread lift rebuilds younger, plumper, healthier skin from the inside out.

The Areas a PDO Thread Lift Can Improve

#1. Thread Lift for the Jawline

A MINT PDO Thread Lift can reduce or eliminate jowls and define and sharpen the chin and jawline. A thread lift can also create more attractive “heart-shaped” facial contours.

#2. Thread Lift for the Cheeks

As we age, the cheeks loose subcutaneous fat, and often start to sag and become flat in appearance. But a MINT PDO Thread Lift positions and holds the cheeks back into their original position – creating visibly higher and more prominent cheekbones.

#3. Thread Lift for the Eyes

With age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity and begins to sag and droop – adding years to one’s appearance. A Thread Lift restores the skin to its original, higher position.

And, thread lift “cat-eyes” are extremely popular with women of all ages.  Influencers and celebrities – like super model Bella Hadid and the Kardashian-Jenner women – are known for their ‘feline’ features, with upturned eyes and arched brows.

By inserting a thread at the outer tail of the eyebrow and lifting the brow upwards, it can be anchored at the desired height to achieve the on-trend cat-eye look!

#4. Thread Lift for the Skin

A thread lift softens fine lines and reduces or eliminate wrinkles two ways. First the microscopic “barbs” on the thread securely anchor onto the lax skin, lifting and holding it in place to reduce sagging, wrinkles and lines. But that’s not all!

And, while the PDO threads dissolve and eventually get absorbed by the body, they also stimulate the body’s renewed natural production of collagen – the building block or “scaffolding” of firm, toned, plump healthy skin. This leads to improvement in skin texture, tone, tightness and elasticity for long lasting results.

MINT™ PDO Thread Lift – Austin, TX

Because a PDO thread lift simply restores skin to its original position, the appearance is much more natural-looking than the stretching and cutting of face lift plastic surgery. Additionally, because the PDO threads facilitate renewed production of natural collagen fibers, the skin itself is improved, so results are long lasting.

And, while a MINT™ PDO Thread Lift offers many of the same benefits of a surgical facelift – it does not involve the expense, pain, potential complications, and long recovery period of surgery.

If you would like to look like a younger, healthier, more attractive version of yourself, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ruthie Harper, MD in Austin, TX to see how a minimally-invasive MINT™ PDO thread lift can turn-back the-clock and help you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside!

Common Treatments For Hair Loss

Common Treatments For Hair Loss

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Topical Treatments such as Minoxidil

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is approved by the FDA for female pattern hair loss. It can slow or stop hair loss in most women and may help hair grow back in up to a quarter of those who use it. However, the benefits are lost when you stop using it.

This topical medication is thought to increase Nitric Oxide (NO). NO causes vasodilation of blood vessels that bring nutrients to the hair follicle. Additionally, Minoxidil promotes the growth phase of hair (anagen) and shortens the telogen (resting) phase. Minoxidil must be used forever since discontinuation can lead to loss of hair that was gained during therapy. Minoxidil cannot be used during pregnancy.

Low level light and laser therapy

Devices that emit low-energy laser light may stimulate hair growth to help fight thinning hair. We recommend for both men and women to use only FDA approved type devices that have been proven to show effectiveness in hair restoration. To get the best results treatments must be scheduled regularly over a 2-4 month period of time.

Hair transplantation

This procedure involves moving hair from thicker to thinner areas of the scalp from donor sites. With female pattern hair loss, hair tends to thin from all over, making donor sites limited. The exceptions are women with male pattern baldness or hair loss caused by scarring.

Finasteride (Propecia 1mg or Proscar 5mg ¼ of a tablet)

Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that blocks DHT. DHT is the hormone that causes hair follicles to produce thinner, weaker hair. To help treat this, Dr. Harper uses a specially compounded form of Finasteride called FinPlus that contains Finasteride with added biotin, saw palmetto, horsetail, nettle astragalus, poria cocos, and rehmannia to help boost the effectiveness of this medication.

Finasteride must be used for your entire lifetime since discontinuation can to loss of hair that was gained during therapy. It may take as long as 6 months to notice benefits with this medication.

Side effects of Finasteride include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, gynecomastia, chills, cold sweats, confusion, and dizziness. These side effects usually occur with the 5 mg dose used for prostate issues, however, the 1 mg treatment does not have these.

Spironolactone or Aldactone

This medication blocks androgen production that decreases the amount of DHT, the hormone that causes hair follicles to produce thinner, weaker hair follicles. This medication is commonly used in PCOS. Normal dosages are 50-100 mg and it may take up to 3 months to work. Once the medication has been deemed effective, hair can typically be maintained with a lower dose. Side effects include hyperkalemia, headache, fatigue, menstrual irregularity, and GI bleeding.

Progesterone

This hormone blocks androgen production that decreases the amount of DHT, the hormone that weakens hair follicles and leads to thinner, weaker hair follicles.

Low Level Light / Laser Therapy (LLL)

Red light therapy in the spectrum of 630 – 670 NM increases cellular ATP production that stimulates growth, extracellular matrix deposition, and cell proliferation at the hair follicle improving hair growth as well as hair health. LLL decreases inflammation and increases blood supply to the scalp area. Hair follicles need to be present for this treatment to be effective.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP contains natural growth and healing factors that accelerate tissue regeneration to enhance hair follicle function. In addition, PRP has been shown to stimulate stem cells to regenerate hair. Additional growth factors may be added to increase the effectiveness of this treatment.

Microneedling

A small handheld device allows 10,000 precise channels to be created through which PRP can better be absorbed into the scalp.

A-Cell

A-Cell is a cellular regenerator that activates and recruit stem cells that are critical for healthy hair growth. This product can be used with or without PRP.

Protein

Provides critical amino acid building blocks for hair growth including cysteine and methionine. Additionally, methionine is involved with the methylation process described earlier and cysteine is vital for glutathione production.

Iron

Iron supplements are given based on blood work. We use a special form of iron that is not irritation to the stomach and is non-constipating. Foods that can decrease the absorption of iron into the bloodstream, include coffee, tea, and soybeans. Supplementing the diet with vitamin C can help the body absorb iron. It’s wise to eat foods that are high in iron, including lean red meat, dired fruit, broccoli, egg yolks, lentils, spinach, and chicken.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D will be given based on blood work results. We use a special form of vitamin D which contains vitamin K. This additional nutrient is important to keep calcium in the bones when taking vitamin D. Vitamin D levels should be measured every 3 months as high levels of vitamin D can be toxic. Additionally, vitamin D can be found in foods such as salmon, mushrooms, and grains.

Glutathione

This critical antioxidant glutathione is responsible for quenching oxidative stress and calming autoimmune inflammation.

Zinc

Zinc supplements will be given based on the zinc blood test. This nutrient can be found in foods such as lamb, turkey, pumpkin seeds, and chocolate. Periodic testing for blood levels of zinc will done. 30 – 40 mg/day of zinc may be used for at least a 1 year period.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins with vitamins A, E, B complex, and Omega-3 and 6. A twice-daily dose of a complete multivitamin with the above nutrients should be taken for healthy hair as well as a healthy body. Additionally, B vitamins can be found in foods such as grains, eggs, and avocados.

Biotin

A component necessary for the production and maintenance of healthy hair. Biotin enhances, hair growth, thickens hair fibers, and diminishes shedding. It also plays a role in the overall health of skin and nails. Biotin is commonly found in food such as egg yolks, liver, rice, and milk.

Other nutrients for healthy hair

  • Melatonin
  • Gingko (antioxidant)
  • Saw palmetto (fatty acid oils and sterols)
  • L-lysine

Your stylist may have temporary fixes for hair loss, but getting to the underlying causes of your hair loss is key to reestablishing a healthy head of hair. A styling product for thin hair may temporarily help hide hair loss. You apply it to the root area and gently blow dry to build volume-letting hair air dry partially before using a blow dryer.

Special cosmetics can camouflage visible areas of the scalp and keratin fiber hair cosmetics may be worth a try. They’re sprinkled over the thinning patch, where their static charge makes hair appear thicker. In addition, a shorter cut, a different part, or a gentle body wave may make thinning hair less visible while new hair grows in.

Healthy hair leads to a better appearance

Your hair says a lot about the overall health of your body and hair loss is often times the first sign of underlying health issues. When the body is under stress from any of the above causes, hair growth is stunted and energy is redirected to other cells throughout the body. While age is definitely a factor in hair loss, the other factors listed above are much more influential in solving the hair loss mystery.

The best way to get to the root of the problem is to determine the underlying cause. It is important to see a specialist in hair loss if there seems to be something wrong, because the sooner treatment is started, the better the chances are for improving your hair growth.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_widget_sidebar show_bg=”false” sidebar_id=”sidebar_1″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”2″ gap=”10″ margin_top=”50″ margin_bottom=”50″ padding_top=”25″ padding_bottom=”25″ css=”.vc_custom_1515775940018{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Ready to Book a Consultation?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

While everyone wants some fun in the sun, too much UV exposure causes skin deterioration and photo-aging; robbing skin of its youthful appearance and leading to unsightly pigment changes including red and brown spots.

Damage accumulates with each sun exposure and increases exponentially when a sunburn occurs, damaging your skin’s DNA and causing persistent inflammation and oxidative stress.

Prevention is Key

Even those with the best intentions often have sun-related skin issues. That’s why prevention is so important!  It’s always best to avoid too much sun exposure and sunburn. If you diligently take the right steps to properly protect yourself, it’s likely you will avoid sunburns and the short-term consequences that come along with them, including  painful inflammation, redness, blistering, and the long-term risks of skin damage and skin cancer.

Here are some signs of sun damage you shouldn’t ignore.

  • Increased area of wrinkles and irregular pigmentation.
  • Deep wrinkles, vertical creases and loose, sagging skin due to a condition called solar elastosis.
  • Solar lentigines, commonly known as liver spots, that can develop even at a young age and eventually spread throughout the body with age.
  • Brown lesions, known as labial lentigo, that can appear on the lips.
  • “Mask of pregnancy” or melasma which can result in a brown darkening of facial skin. This condition also occurs with an increase in estrogen and progesterone, as in pregnancy.
  • Poikiloderma, a reddish-brown pigmentation that forms in irregular patches.
  • Scaly raised patches also known as actinic or solar keratosis that may appear flesh color to pink or brown.
  • Lentigo maligna, a growth which begins as a dark flat spot that gradually darkens and enlarges after long-term sun exposure.

To minimize damage to your skin by repeated sun exposure, wear protective clothing like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing. Apply an SPF of 25 or higher to exposed skin and reapply frequently. When choosing a sunscreen, here are some things to consider.

Physical Barrier Sunscreens

Sometimes referred to as mineral or inorganic sunscreens, physical barrier sunscreens use filters to deflect and scatter UV rays from the surface of the skin, protecting the skin almost like an umbrella. Inorganic sunscreens include zinc and titanium and provide the best protection from sun damage. In the case of sunscreens “inorganic” is good!

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, use chemical filters to absorb the energy of UV rays, converting it to heat that is dispersed in the skin. This conversion is known to prevent sunburn but can have harmful effects on your skin. Ironically, chemical sunscreens are called “organic”, clearly this is one time when “organic” may not be as desired.

Susceptibility to Sun Damage

To take the most effective measures to protect your skin from photo-aging, it’s crucial to be aware if you’re genetically more predisposed to the damaging effects of the sun. Dr. Ruthie Harper recommends her SKINSHIFT DNA test  to determine if your skin is  biologically more prone to sun damage. Only when fully educated can you effectively protect your skin and have optimal health and beauty.

3 Ways to Avoid a Filler Nightmare

3 Ways to Avoid a Filler Nightmare

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Facial fillers are a common cosmetic treatment for wrinkles with low risk of ill-effects–in the hands of a skilled physician. Fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm, Voluma, or Boletera have become a great way to rejuvenate your face without surgery or downtime.

However, when used incorrectly or in excess, clients are left looking over-volumized, like they’ve had their face unnaturally inflated in an attempt to remove all wrinkles. Bad experiences with facial fillers can leave clients with both physical discomfort and embarrassing side effects, including an over-inflated, unnatural look. Here are 3 ways to avoid a filler nightmare.

First: Always Make Educated Decisions with Fillers

Facial fillers have become increasingly popular, since they are non-surgical, yield immediate benefits and require virtually no down-time. Their rapid popularity has even led to injections being offered by many hair salons and spas. But while the convenience of getting fillers done at your local salon or spa may seem tempting, you should always consult with and have this procedure done by a well trained medical professional.

Most filler gone wrong stories occur when fillers are used by someone without the skill, experience or credentials to use them.

So, what do you look for in a filler? There are many different types of fillers, some create volume, some create lift, some are immediate and some stimulate collagen production over time. Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, the natural substance in your skin that keeps is smooth and youthful.

We all begin to lose hyaluronic acid after the age of 30 making replacement of volume with hyaluronic fillers a natural solution to prevent the aging process. Be sure the professional doing your filler is knowledgeable about all types of filler and is picking the right one for you.

Second: Look Younger, Not Plumper

When exploring hyaluronic fillers, beware of excess! Personalized beauty expert, Dr. Ruthie Harper explains “while filler can be used to replace volume deficits, more importantly filler should be used for structural support to recreate the youthfulness that has been lost from sinking and sagging of the face that occurs with time and aging.”

An experienced injector will strategically place filler to lift areas that are drooping and will restore the skin to an original, more youthful position without over-volumizing. Even celebrities are not immune to filler nightmares, the photos below show what poor filler injections can do to your appearance.

An over-inflated face can never duplicate the face one had in youth. Plump does not equal youthful, and it looks just plain odd! Overly-plumped faces are so obvious that even a child can recognize that something doesn’t look quite right if filler has been used incorrectly. So, when it comes to fillers, more is definitely not better. You should always have a strategic plan designed by your doctor to get the perfect results.

Third: Find a More Youthful You, Not a Different Face

If you’ve followed the first two points, you’re well on your way to a professional and great experience with fillers. The last and most important step is the consultation with your doctor. It’s only by explaining to your doctor both what you do and don’t want that you’ll get the best results.

Dr. Ruthie Harper asks that you bring pictures of yourself in your 20’s to your initial consultation so she can discuss with you how and where filler can be used to recreate your own natural, youthful look. In most spas or in the hands of an unskilled injector, this level of care is rarely taken. With an experienced medical professional, fillers can be use to create natural beauty and a more rejuvenated version of you.

If you’ve had a bad experience or outcome with fillers at another place, we welcome you to call our office for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Ruthie Harper. She will explain how fillers, when done correctly, can take years off your appearance.

In the right hands, fillers are an important part of the anti-aging tool kit. Ruthie Harper MD has trained with the world’s experts to learn exactly how to do this and is an expert on how to use filler to recreate a youthful, natural look. Her clientele comes to her from all over the United States for her skill and art when using fillers.

Know The Lifespan of Your Face Care Products

[vc_row type=”1″ gap=”10″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”50″ css=”.vc_custom_1515778665150{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

Know The Lifespan of Your Face Care Products

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This week, I was interviewed by the New York Times to weigh in on preservative systems and the shelf life of cosmetic products. Here’s what’s important to know: There is a difference between the shelf life and the use life of skin care products and it is important to recognize this difference when you buy them.

The shelf life of a product is how long it is fully safe and effective for use after it is manufactured. The use life of a product is how long a product is safe and effective to use after you have purchased and opened it. Shelf life for all products should never exceed 1 year. Use life for products will vary.

For lip and eye products, the use life is 3 months. For face products such as cleansers, toners, moisturizers, sunscreen, etc, the use life is 1 year. As a general rule, the more ingredients there are in a product, the shorter the shelf life and the use life of the product.

For safety, products must have effective preservative systems to prevent them from growing bacteria, mold, fungus and pathogens after being opened. The major risk associated with the use of skin care products is not allergic reactions, it is using products that have been contaminated with mold, fungus, or bacteria after opening and with use, can cause serious eye, lip or skin infections.

There has been a trend in the last several years toward using new, “organic” preservative systems in products because the word organic holds marketing appeal for people. And while this may capture the consumer, I recommend using only safe preservative systems that have been on the market for 5 plus years to guarantee a record of safety and effectiveness.

Having said this, parabens and other preservatives, which are not good for the skin and not good for the body, should never be used. The fact that parabens cause hormonal disruption when used in skin care products has now been well established. At SKINSHIFT, We choose to use preservatives with a long track record for safety and effectiveness that are good for the skin as well as the body.

The entire SKINSHIFT line of skin care products was created by Dr. Ruthie Harper to provide a personalized skin care program specifically designed for your genetic profile. A simple cheek swab allows us to look into your DNA to determine your skin’s genetic strengths and weaknesses. The results from your SKINSHIFT DNA Test Kit determine which SKINSHIFT products are right for you. All of our products are genetically designed, physician-created, organic cosmeceuticals and most importantly use only safe and effective preservative systems for health and for beauty![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_widget_sidebar show_bg=”false” sidebar_id=”sidebar_1″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”2″ gap=”10″ margin_top=”50″ margin_bottom=”50″ padding_top=”25″ padding_bottom=”25″ css=”.vc_custom_1513015230624{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Ready to Book a Consultation?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
