Mesotherapy Body Contouring FAQS

Mesotherapy Body Contouring FAQs

Sometimes exercise and diet alone are just not enough to get that tone trimmed, bathing suit body you desire. And, as we get older, factors including hormone imbalance, metabolism decline, heredity, and even gravity make it harder and harder to keep our bodies looking trim, tight, and youthful.

Dr. Ruthie Harper in Austin, TX now offers “mesotherapy” to help women and men approve their appearance, without painful expensive surgery and with no downtime.

In this article renowned Austin, TX Integrative Health Specialist, Ruthie Harper answers patients’ questions about mesotherapy – and how it can help take their appearance to new level of youthfulness.

What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a natural, in-office procedure that uses the injection of specially formulated vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to remove excess fat, rejuvenate the face and body, and tighten skin.

Dr. Michel Pistor developed mesotherapy in France in 1952. Originally developed to relieve pain, this natural technique has been expanded in the United States and across the world to help:

•             remove fat from the belly, thighs, buttocks, hips, legs, arms, and face

•             tighten loose skin and reduce cellulite

•             fade wrinkles and lines and lighten pigmented skin

In addition to its use in contouring the body, mesotherapy has also been used with some success to treat hair loss due to alopecia.

What is the Mesotherapy Procedure?

Mesotherapy involves a series of injections using a special, very fine, short needle. Depending on the location and depth of the treatment, patients may or may not have numbing medicine applied to their skin.

Dr. Harper administers the injections at different depths – from 1 to 4 millimeters – depending upon the condition that is being treated. Each injection places a small amount of a specially formulated solution into the middle layer (mesoderm) of skin.

The principal underlying mesotherapy is that it corrects underlying issues, including poor circulation, toxin accumulation, inflammation and more.

What Is Injected During Mesotherapy?

There is not a single, ‘standard’ formula injected during mesotherapy. Austin, TX Integrative medicine specialist Dr. Ruthie Harper will customize a unique solution based on each patient’s individual needs.

Mesotherapy injection solutions may include:

•             Prescription vasodilators

•             Antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory compounds

•             Natural hormones such as calcitonin and thyroxin

•             Enzymes such as collagenase and hyaluronidase

•             Herbal extracts

•             Vitamins and minerals

What is the Cost of Mesotherapy?

The cost of mesotherapy will depends upon the type of treatment, the location, and the number of sessions that are needed. Not only is mesotherapy much less expensive than liposuction, fat loss or face lift surgery, or laser body contouring, there is virtually no downtime afterwards.

How Should I Prepare for Mesotherapy?

Dr. Harper will provide you with specific pre-treatment instructions. However, generally, patients should avoid aspirin, as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for one week before the procedure. (Motrin®, Advil, Naprosyn®, Aleve®). This is because these pain relievers can increase the possibility of bleeding and bruising during mesotherapy.

How Many Mesotherapy Treatments Will I Need?

Depending on the location, type, and degree of treatment, multiple several mesotherapy sessions are needed to achieve the desired effect. Patients typically require between 3 and 15 sessions, initially spaced every 7 to 10 days. Once the skin starts to improve, the treatments will be spaced once every two weeks or once a month.

How does Mesotherapy Body Contouring Compare to Liposuction?

Mesotherapy is a safer, less painful, nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for removing unwanted fat – with no downtime.

Liposuction requires anesthesia and multiple small incisions. A plastic tube is inserted through the incisions to suction out the fat using a vacuum. Recovery can take up to six weeks, with extensive bruising, swelling and pain.  And risks of liposuction include nerve and blood vessel damage, dimpling and irregular skin contours, and post-procedure infection. Liposuction is also very expensive, costing on average around $4,000 in the Austin, TX area.

Mesotherapy requires no incisions, and the cost is much lower than liposuction. There is typically little to no pain, swelling or bruising afterwards and patients can return to their normal daily activities the same day.
